Chapter 2: The Whispering Willow

The forest at night wasn’t scary; it was just sleepy. The bluebells nodded their heads as Barnaby walked past, releasing a faint, sweet scent of lavender into the cool air.

He reached the Great Willow, whose long, sweeping branches dipped gently into a glassy, still pond. High up, caught in a fork of the smoothest branch, was a spool of glowing silver thread. It cast a soft, rhythmic pulse across the water, rippling like a slow breath—in and out, in and out.

Barnaby stepped onto the soft moss at the base of the tree. “Excuse me, Mr. Willow,” he murmured, trying not to wake the sleeping ladybugs on the bark. “May I borrow the thread?”

The tree swayed with a deep, slow groan, dipping its highest branch down to the ground like a polite bow. Barnaby gently took the spool between his teeth. It felt warm, and it hummed with a quiet, soothing vibration that made his ears droop just a little bit more.
