Chapter 1: The Zero-Day Protocol
Vesper Thorne didn’t exist in the state registry, but her fingerprints were all over the dark web’s most lucrative corporate autopsies. Sitting in the corner of a dimly lit, smoke-heavy diner in Stockholm, she adjusted her leather jacket to hide the matte-black cybernetic sleeve covering her left forearm a souvenir from a extraction job in Munich that had gone sideways.
Her contact, an aging investigative journalist named Henrik Vance, slid a cold cup of coffee across the table. Beneath the saucer was an encrypted flash drive.
“They’re calling it an accident,” Henrik whispered, his eyes bloodshot. “The CEO of Vanguard Biotech plunged from his yacht last night. But he sent me this file twenty minutes before his heart stopped. It’s an algorithm, Vesper. They’re targeting the city’s power grid, but the code has a digital signature I’ve never seen.”
Vesper slotted the drive into her modified handheld deck. Her fingers, tipped with carbon-fiber typing nubs, blurred across the interface. The screen flashed amber. A localized zero-day exploit began eating through her firewall.
“It’s not just a cyber-attack, Henrik,” Vesper said, her voice like grinding stones. “It’s a kill switch. And whoever wrote it is already in the building.”
The diner’s neon signs flickered and died. Outside, the streetlights went black. In the rearview mirror of a parked sedan across the street, Vesper caught the reflection of three men stepping out, their suppressed pistols drawn.
“Move,” she barked, grabbing Henrik by the collar.
