Chapter 4: The Sinking Ship

The address of Voss’s black-site command center was burned into the decrypted data packets Vesper intercepted during the crash. It was an old, decommissioned dry dock on the edge of the archipelago.

Rain poured in sheets as Vesper and Henrik approached. Leaving Henrik with a radio, Vesper slipped through a broken ventilation shaft. The interior was a cavernous warehouse filled with monitors and heavy satellite uplinks. Voss stood on a metal catwalk, watching a countdown timer on a massive projector screen. Three minutes until total grid collapse.

Vesper didn’t announce her presence. She fired from the shadows, taking out Voss’s remaining two guards before they could raise their rifles.

Voss spun, pulling a high-caliber pistol and firing blindly into the dark. “You can’t stop it, Vesper! The old world needs to burn to build the new market!”

A bullet clipped Vesper’s shoulder, tearing through fabric and drawing blood. She didn’t flinch. Lunging from the gloom, she tackled Voss over the guardrail. They crashed ten feet down onto a metal shipping container.

Voss scrambled for his gun, but Vesper’s cybernetic hand clamped around his wrist, crushing the bones until he dropped the weapon with a scream. With her right hand, she drove her own knife into the main satellite control terminal next to them, twisting the blade until the screens turned to static and the countdown halted at 00:04.

Voss spat blood, glaring up at her. “You think this ends with me?”

“No,” Vesper whispered, pulling her deck to copy his personal hard drives, exposing every corporate shadow-broker on his payroll. “It ends with them.”

Leaving Voss bound for the authorities, Vesper vanished into the rainy Stockholm night before the sirens could even be heard in the distance, a ghost once more.
