Chapter 3: The Ghost in the Server
“They know everything,” Henrik panicked, shaking as they hid in the cargo hold of an abandoned subway car. “My files, my sources… they’re going to erase it all.”
“They want the decryption key,” Vesper said, her eyes fixed on the burner phone’s code structure. “The algorithm needs a physical key stored on Vanguard’s private servers in the industrial district. If we don’t wipe the server, half the Baltic region goes dark by midnight, and your name will be framed as the digital terrorist who did it.”
An hour later, they breached the Vanguard Biotech logistics facility. Leaving Henrik to watch the perimeter, Vesper bypassed the biometric lock on the server room using a looped thermal signature she’d spoofed on the fly.
The server room was a freezing, humming cavern of blue LED lights. Vesper plugged her deck directly into the central terminal. The progress bar crept forward: 20%… 45%…
Suddenly, the overhead monitors flared to life. A face appeared—pale, sharp-featured, with cold, calculating eyes. It was Kaelen Voss, Vanguard’s chief of security, a ghost Vesper had hunted for three years.
“Hello, Vesper,” Voss smiled through the screen. “Still playing the righteous avenger? You’re too late. The upload is bleeding into the grid. If you abort it, the backup server at my location will detonate the local substations anyway.”
“I don’t look for backups, Voss,” Vesper said coolly. “I hunt the source.”
She drove a physical kill-pin into the terminal, overloading the system in a shower of electrical sparks. The facility alarms began to wail.
